Head of Financial Institutions
Juan Garcia, appointed as Head of Financial Institutions for International Merchant Bank Ltd (IMBL) plays a pivotal role in overseeing the company’s major institutional business lines. These include Correspondent Banking, Global Custody, and Operational Banking for Institutional Banking clients.
Under Garcia’s leadership, International Merchant Bank Ltd has successfully established the infrastructure for Institutional Banking Services, positioning IMBL among industry leaders and significantly increasing its market potential.
Prior to his current role, Garcia held key positions in the international banking sector. He directed operations at Medici Bank International, served as Senior Operations Officer at State Trust International Bank & Trust, and led payments initiatives as the bank’s Payments Specialist at Stern International Bank. Additionally, he managed operations and onboarding teams for Euro Exchange International Bank in Puerto Rico, Mexico, and Spain.
Garcia’s extensive US commercial banking background dates back to his early career at Oriental Bank & Trust, where he worked as an executive in the bank’s equipment and automobile finance department. Later, he took on administrative duties at RG Premier Bank’s mortgage lending subsidiary, RG Mortgage Corp, overseeing four branches. Before transitioning to international banking, Garcia managed Puerto Rico’s northern district for BBVA's mortgage department, which comprised five branches.
In addition to his professional achievements, Garcia holds licenses through the NMLS and has passed FINRA’S SIE exam. He studied accounting at the University of Phoenix and is a published author. Garcia’s advanced proficiency of both English and Spanish has rendered him a sought-after orator, frequently called upon for public speaking engagements across a spectrum of audiences. Outside of work, Garcia is actively engaged in the community. He founded Backstage Live, an initiative that raises funds for the San Jorge Children’s Hospital in Puerto Rico through performing arts, and co-founded the PAFAM Festival, which promotes competitive spoken word poetry slams in inner cities and encourages the development of written and oral communication skills among local artists in Puerto Rico.
